Moving to Posterous

Hi Everyone.

Thank you for sharing our experiences over the past few months.

Much of this blog has focused on the build up to our move to Vancouver and the frustrations / hard work we’ve put in to make it work. I’ve decided to start a new posterous blog that focuses on the events that happen once we get to Canada (with maybe just a couple of things in the run up to “e-day”).

If you would like to carry on reading about our life in BC feel free to check out the new posterous blog over at : Notes from BC

Another piece of the puzzle received

On Saturday morning (6th) I woke up early in anticipation of gettings things ready for our party in the evening. Whilst sitting up on the bed and still trying to wake up Lou’s Mum told me that some mail had arrived for her from London - as soon as I heard that I knew that it what was we had been waiting for all this time. I checked the post mark and there it was ‘Canadian High Commission London’. I ran upstairs and burst into the bathroom to interupt Lou whilst she was in the middle of showering, I knew she’d want to know immediately and I wasn’t wrong! Lou was soon wrapping the towell around herself and running downstairs to open it. Being pessimistic I tried to not get too excited reminding myself in my head that it could just be a request for more information, but within seconds my concerns were washed away. She carefully opened the letter and there it was - authorization for her to enter Canada with instructions on where to process the permit at the port of entry!

I can’t describe how good it feels to have this now! We had hoped this would come before we fly on the 27th and now that it has this means we don’t need to book a return flight or have any additional trouble. It’s also a very strange co-incidence that on the day of our farewell party (booked before we knew when we were flying!) that we should receive it, perfect timing I guess!

The rest of the day felt fantastic and it was great to be able to share this news with our family and friends in the evening. The party itself was excellent too and it couldn’t have gone any better. For those of you reading this that attended - thank you for making the effort, it was wonderful to see you.

Better late than never

I’m feeling very happy today as I’ve finally booked the flights to Canada and we’re officially going to be flying out on Saturday June 27th. I just thought I’d write this little note for people that have been interested in our progress so far.

We had originally planned to be out there in March, then that date slipped into April and then it ran into May. It’s great to put a stop to the escalation and know that it won’t be running past June!

We are still awaiting paperwork for Lou (CIC authorization and CRPNBC registration) but we hope to receive these by June 18th. If we don’t then we shall have to book a return flight for Lou (so that they let her in to Canada) and then cancel it when the paperwork finally comes through. As our friend Sarah put it best, we’d rather “wait in Canada and get a lot of things sorted, than wait in the UK and get even more frustrated”. In every waiting situation there comes a point where you can’t simply wait any longer, and we passed that a month ago! So, even though things are not as perfect as we’d like (in terms of having everything ready) we have to just ‘bite the bullet’ and go for it. Having said that though there is not really any massive risk even if the stuff doesn’t come through in time to be honest. As a British citizen Lou will be allowed to stay in the country for 6 months anyway, it’s just that she won’t be able to start work as soon as she’d hoped. We have enough money behind us to keep us going though so even if this happens at least it won’t hit us too hard. Having said all this, it will be good and a lot less hassle if we do get the stuff before we fly. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the next few weeks.

The flight prices also played a big part in the decision in booking up now, as the longer you leave it the more expensive they come. For instance, if we’d have booked them last month for the same date we’d have saved £200 off the price we paid today. There’s no point in dwelling on ifs buts and maybes though. We have booked it, paid it and are all set now so that is all that matters!

Waiting for our move to Canada

Vancouver

Hi, I think it’s about time I wrote a blog post as it’s been a while!

As many of you are already aware we plan to move to Vancouver in the next few weeks, here is just an update to let you know some more about our current situation. In recent weeks we’ve been answering the same questions over and over from people and hopefully this will enable us to save some breath and repetition. That said, I hope it doesn’t sound like we’re non-appreciative of people’s interest! We are very grateful that so many people care for us and are interested in the move etc, it’s just kind of hard to answer the same question again and again whilst maintaining a smile and tone of voice that doesn’t sound robotic! ;-)

The last few weeks have been very busy and full of emotions, it’s really hard to put in to words how it has all gone but I’ll give it a go. Firstly in April (ironically 2 weeks before I planned to hand in my month’s notice) I was given the news at work that I was being let go of at IBM due to them implementing cost cutting measures (contractors always being the first ones out the door). Whilst this didn’t really bother me with regards to leaving it did mean I was a few weeks short of what I had planned and therefore would not quite be receiving the amount of money I’d been hoping for. Thankfully this only upset our plans ever so slightly.

We had already arranged to move out of our rented house at the end of April so we went ahead and left on the 30th. We had spent a few weeks previous to then clearing out / selling / and donating nearly all of our non essential possessions (our plan is to leave with 2 suitcases). It’s amazing how much stuff you can actually gather in such a short space of time, and this is despite being a couple who dislikes too much clutter! However it felt good to get rid of our stuff that we didn’t use and either make some money or help others out by giving stuff to them. We also spent a while making the house look as immaculate as possible so that the Landlord could have no excuse not to give us our full bond back when we handed back the keys!

We are now temporarily living at my fiancée’s mum’s house (still in Coventry) and also spending some time with my folks in Lancashire. Luckily both sets of families have been great, they’ve literally bent over backwards to help us out and accommodate us for the next few weeks. It’s a bit weird going back to living under somebody else’s roof after having your own place for so long but it’s not hard (because they are so nice), in fact it’s been quite enjoyable and fun at times (it sort of feels like being a Student again, especially with me not working now).

At the same time as moving out of our home my fiancée also finally received all the documents she needed in order to apply for a temporary work permit (she already has a job offer for a position in Port Coquitlam). It’s unreal the amount of stuff you need and the expense in obtaining it all, but we keep telling ourselves it’s a small price to pay for living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world! I’m just glad I have a Canadian passport, it would have been even more of a headache to do it for me too. Shortly after submitting the application to the Canadian High Commission she then received her medical requests which she promptly completed a few days later in Birmingham. The results (all good as expected, phew!) have now been sent back to the High Commission and we’re now literally waiting on them to make a final decision which can take up to 3-6 weeks, but we’re praying it’s no later than the middle of June. As soon as they send us the letter of approval we can book our flights and be off as soon as possible. I can’t begin to describe how frustrating it is to wait for this simple letter, our lives feel like they are on pause and we just wish we could fly out tomorrow!

In reality we should have applied for her to get permanent residency through me but we were originally informed this could take over a year and that the temporary work permit route would be quickest route (then apply for PR once we are actually there, which is now what we’ll do). We’ve since found out that some other people have had there permanent residency’s done and dusted within 3 months, but we can’t change the past now, oh well.

We’re now on what we are calling ‘the final hurdle’, apart from the approval letter there are some niggly issues with regards to her nursing registration but hopefully they’ll be resolved soon (caused by an error from somebody at Coventry University - again so frustrating). At least it is giving us some time to do a bit more planning and research as you can never have too much. I’m spending time doing stuff such as sussing out the best places to live in Burnaby, what companies / packages to go for etc. The kind BC based people on twitter have been a great help with regards to some of these things (thanks so much!).

We hope and pray for good news soon, my fingers are crossed so often I think people must assume I’m deformed ;-). Everyone asks us when are we are going and each time we have to tell them we don’t know - one things for sure - when we do know then trust me you won’t have to ask, we’ll be letting everyone know straight away. Until that greatly anticipated day, stay tuned and if we have anything further to share we’ll let you know.

This whole experience has already taught us so many things already and we’ve not even stepped on the plane yet, maybe this could be another blog post someday!

Thanks for taking the time to read our story so far. :-)

Cañas y Tapas Restaurant, Leicester

A week ago today I visited a new restaurant called ‘Cañas y Tapas’ in Leicester, it is an authentic Spanish tapas bar and is part of a chain which already has over 70 restaurants back in their homeland.

Cañas y Tapas opened 2 months ago and joins on to the new highcross shopping area, I’m lead to believe it is their first restaurant in the UK and once they get well known I’m sure they will be opening up in more cities soon.

I went with my Mum and Grandad and none of us knew what to expect at first but we wanted to try something different. Our first impressions were great though, the place looks really nice and the staff are very friendly (a mixture of English and Spanish). We were excited to be trying something new and it took us a while make our order as we had over 70 dishes to choose from! You can either order portions which are suitable for one or big enough to share, we did the latter. We chose the broken eggs with potatoes and ham, prawn fritters and chicken and vegetable skewers. They also have a good selection of drinks, me and my Grandad opted for a pint of San Miguel (even if it was only 1pm!) and my Mum had a really nice coffee.

The staff go out of their way to make you enjoy the experience and are happy to describe any items or make suggestions. From where we sat we could also see into the kitchen (it has a serving hatch built into the wall) and it looks incredibly clean and well ordered (which to me is always reassuring after watching so many programs on TV that cover nightmare kitchens!). There is a partly covered drinking area outside which would be great for the summer, it is heated and would probably be a nice place to move out too and have a drink in after finishing your meal.

The meal itself was absolutely delicious, everything tastes very fresh, authentically spanish (probably helps that all the kitchen staff seem spanish themselves!) and everything is cooked to perfection. The whole atmosphere of the place makes it really enjoyable. The staff are lovely, they play relaxing Spanish tunes, the place itself looks really good and it just makes you feel happy. My Grandad and I even commented on how it made you feel like you are on holiday! Price wise too I was amazed, considering we all had a delicious lunch and drink each the total bill was only £29. It was a fantastic afternoon and for an hour and a half we felt like we’d escaped the miserable British winter and gone abroad.

If you are in Leicester and fancy having a nice meal, (it would be good for both a family or a romantic date), I highly recommend this place. I’ve never felt compelled to write about a restaurant before so that probably gives an idea of the good time we had there.
